“When you know better, do better”

Unity Project, a 501(c)(3)non-profit corporation, is currently in our second season. We are a choir that is equal parts singing and service. With 34 singers committed to being in community with one another and with our fellow humans on earth, our membership spans multiple Colorado cities, 5 states, and 2 countries. We began this project during a global pandemic, and built a strong, diverse community of singers primarily over Zoom. 

As the world begins to open up and we have plans to be serving more, through music and otherwise, we must learn how to be of true service to many types of diverse communities. We understand that in service and outreach, we can very easily do harm even though we mean well. We vow to listen to our community partners and follow their lead, actively working to dismantle the systems and individual biases that have historically placed white-skinned people at the center and at the head of any outreach. 

To do this, we have partnered with some amazing instructors. 

*Nurturing Justice: led by nationally certified trainers Clare Twomey and Kris Watson, Nurturing Justice will offer Unity Project a 2-day intensive workshop that will teach our members about the history of race and racism, and seek to dismantle white-skinned supremacy in our outreach and service to our community. 

* Melanie Trecek-King: Associate Professor of Biology at Massasoit Community College in Massachusetts, who also teaches Critical Thinking and hosts ThinkingIsPower.com. Melanie will be joining us over the course of our season to present lectures on Critical Thinking.

* Dena Samuels: a mindfulness-based equity, diversity and inclusion consultant and coach. Our founders will be completing Dr. Samuels’ certification program on facilitating effective DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) conversations. 

We are seeking to raise $10,000 in this 2021-2022 campaign. 100% of our membership has participated. 

Roughly 90% of whatever we raise will go directly towards our training and development with these passionate and knowledgeable trainers.**

We commit to giving back 10% of whatever amount we raise to our community.  We are excited to partner with Deerfield Hills Community Center in an after-school program for 3rd-5th graders. We will be using a portion of the amount raised to supply the participants with instruments, t-shirts, and financial support. Stay tuned for more details on this project!

We truly believe that this training, coupled with our passion for excellent interpretation of diverse music, will propel us forward to do meaningful, challenging, life-changing work in our Colorado Springs community and beyond.
